The total population of Kaunas region is 677,000. More than 425,000 are working age people.
Over 220,000 of working population has secondary education and 95,000 higher education (it makes 22% of working population).
There are 7 universities, 6 colleges and 17 vocational schools located in Kaunas region, which are the basis for highly qualified and skilled labor force in the Region. The general number of students in Kaunas region in the academic year 2006 was 69,500.
Kaunas Technological University (KTU, www.ktu.lt) is one of the major centers in Lithuania for graduates in technical fields such as Engineering, IT, etc. as well as Management. KTU has also a strong R&D basis.
Vytautas Magnus University (VDU, www.vdu.lt) prepares highly qualified graduates in the field of Humanities and Social sciences. The University is famous for well prepared, fluently speaking foreign languages graduates in Economics, Management, Languages, and Social sciences
Kaunas University of Medicine (KMU, www.kmu.lt) is the largest institution of medical education and training in Lithuania. Most of the graduates work at Hospital of Kaunas University of Medicine. Kaunas University of Medicine is also the largest medical research institution in Lithuania.

Lithuanian University
of Agriculture (LZUU), established in 1924, is one of 15 university type higher
education institutions and the only one of this background in Lithuania. LZUU is delivering
bachelor, master and doctor degrees in agronomy, forestry, agricultural
engineering, economics, management and water management. Spacey
University campus is situated close to
the Nemunas River
at the outskirts of Kaunas,
and it positively differs from those fractionated and imprisoned by city stone
walls. More than 7000 students and 400 teachers may enjoy big green areas
surrounding teaching and dwelling facilities. University Experimental Station
(45 ha) and Training Farm (420 ha) are adjusted to University campus to make
the scenery even more picturesque. Agricultural exhibitions held at the
premises of University twice a year attract Lithuanian and even foreign
expositors and a lot of visitors and support practical students training
annually. The World Ploughing Contest was hosted on the fields of our training
farm in September 2007.
Our
University is facing and tackling new challenges in higher education of
European dimension. An active participation in the EU launched TEMPUS, LEONARDO
and ERASMUS programmes has benefited an obvious break-through in that field.
Besides that our University has joined several academic networks such as
European University Association (EUA), Baltic Universities
of Veterinary and Agriculture (BOVA), Baltic Sea Region Universities Network
(BSRUN), Association for European Life Sciences Universities (ICA) etc. Magna
Charta Universitatum was signed in Bologna
in 2004.
University's teachers are
active experts on Lithuanian agricultural and forest policy. New knowledge created
in the fundamental research trends as methodological background of quality
assessment of environment and agricultural production, cell selection and
breading, energetic processes in biotechnologies, methodological background of
rural development, technological research in agriculture, water and forestry serves
as a basis for innovative education of our graduates. Access to and use of the
EU structural funds is gradually improving studies' and research possibilities.
Mission of our
University, ethical and cultural values to be propagated at it and the future
activities and tasks to be taken and solved are periodically discussed and
adopted by our Senate as The Strategy of LZUU.
Seeking to pool resources related to both the scientific potential
gained in the field of agriculture, forestry, water and food economy, and
representatives of business related to these activities the Nemunas valley has been conceived. It is
expected to elaborate and introduce technologies with the aim of contributing
most beneficially to the development of national agriculture, economy and
social environment, enhancing scientific research and experimental development
(R&D).

Kaunas city has also the Faculty of Humanities of Vilnius University, the Faculty of Police of Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuanian Veterinary Academy, ISM University of Management and Economics (ISM, www.ism.lt), Lithuanian Energetic‘s Institute (LEI, www.lei.lt). The main vocational schools in Kaunas region are Kaunas School of Mechanics, Kaunas Petrašiunai Labor Market Training Center, Jonava Polytechnic School, Kaunas Food Industry School, Raseiniai Technology and Business School, Kaunas Trade and Business School, Kaunas Builders-constructors Training School.
