Kaunas region has a highly developed transport and engineering infrastructure.

Firstly, it has a well developed network of both local roads and international motorways. Two international multimodal transport corridors cross Kaunas region. International Corridor No. 1 (Via Baltica), a European priority transport corridor connecting Helsinki, St-Petersburg and Warsaw, crosses the Region from north to south and it is Lithuania's gateway to Western Europe. This motorway is integrated into the TransEuropean motorway system, serving as a connection between Nordic countries and Central and Western Europe. International Corridor No. 9B is the main corridor crossing the Region from east to west (Kiev-Minsk-Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda). Moreover, two roads of TEN-T road network (Kaunas-Zarasai-Daugavpils and Vilnius-Prienai-Marijampole) cross the Region.

According to the information of the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania and Transport and Road Research Institute, the technical qualitative parameters of the Region's motorways are above the average in Lithuania.

Secondly, Kaunas region has a highly developed railway infrastructure. The density of railways is above the average in Lithuania. Three railway lines cross the Region: Moscow-Minsk-Kaliningrad, Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda, and Kaunas-Šiauliai-Riga. The project of the European standard railway "Rail Baltica" section between the Lithuanian-Polish border and the Marijampole-Kaunas line is under development. Rail Corridor No. 9D (Kaišiadorys-Kaunas-Kybartai), one of the TransEuropean network railways, crosses the Region. In aaddition there is an electrified section connecting Naujoji Vilnia-Vilnius-Kaunas.

The most important means of public transport in the Region is the railway section Vilnius-Kaunas.

Cargo transportation via rail has been recently rising in the East-West direction (towards Klaipeda sea port 17 million tones per year, in the direction of Kaliningrad - 13 million tones per year).

Resuming the growth of auto transport and the outcoming problems (traffic jams), one could imply that the use of railway transport system should be expanded.

There is a local waterway Kaunas-Birštonas and one of the most important waterways of the country the Nemunas inland waterway Kaunas-Jurbarkas-Klaipeda in Kaunas region. The International Kaunas Inland Water Port, the Nemunas waterway from Kaunas water-power plant till the entry of the river is a part of the international route E41.

Kaunas International Airport (KIA) is the biggest cargo airport in the Baltics. It can serve practically all types of aircraft and has passenger air connections to major cities of Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, Poland, and Germany.

There are also several local airports that are widely used for aerial tourism (Pociunai Airport in Prienai district, Darius and Girenas Airport in Kaunas city).

Kaunas has a well-developed structure of industrial parks, both traditional and R&D with other new projects, such as Technopolis, to follow. It also has a Free Economic Zone with undergoing logistic activities. Kaunas University of Technology Regional Science and Technology Park (till 2006 - Business Incubator, www.ktc.lt), Kaunas High and Information Technology Park (www.techpark.lt) offer a favorable infrastructure for the development of innovative, knowledge-based businesses. Kaunas University of Technology Business Incubator (KTC) was established with an intention to increase R&D activities in Kaunas region. KTC provides support and assist to technology oriented and innovative SME's, start-ups and spin-offs in Kaunas region. KTC services include business and technology transfer services, technical-administrative services, organization of seminars, training sessions to entrepreneurs, and access to laboratories of Kaunas University of Technology.

Technopolis (www.technopolis.lt) is one of the most promising projects in Kaunas region. Technopolis is a high-tech town located just 3 km from the centre of Kaunas, with 6.7 ha of land and well-developed infrastructure. It is planned that the project will attract more than 65 mln. Euro investments only into infrastructure and will create 3000 positions for highly qualified staff.

There is a well developed network of electricity supply in Kaunas Region. The Company VST AB (www.vst.lt) distributes and supplies electric power within the Kaunas region.

Kaunas Hydro Power Plant is the biggest plant in Lithuania using renewable nature resources. Using this kind of resources it produces 80% of Lithuania's energy.

Lithuanian gas-mains cross Kaunas region and as a result the consumers get the best possibility to use gas. The natural gas supplier in Lithuania is Lietuvos dujos AB (www.dujos.lt).

Lithuanian consumers get drinking water only from the underground water sources. Drinking and industrial water in Kaunas region is supplied centrally. 

There are more than 100 water treatment plants in Kaunas region. In Kaunas city the construction of biological water treatment plant is almost finished. Special purpose municipality companies are responsible for water supply and treatment. The owners are responsible for private water borings and exploitation of water treatment plants.
